Synopsis
Starring Ewan McGregor as Oliver, Beginners takes a disarming, charming look at starting over. The new film from writer-director Mike Mills, previously best known for the independent hit Thumbsucker, Beginners is subtle, amusing and exceptionally touching. Told through Oliver’s eyes, the film moves back and forth between childhood memories of his slightly bitter mother, the more recent past when his 75 year old father came out of the closet, and his current affair with Anna, a young French actress (played by Melanie Laurent) conducted in the months following his father Hal’s death.
Beginners is immensely moving, with star performances from all involved. It’s a quiet and unostentatious film, and all the better for it.
