Synopsis
Directed by Vittorio De Sica (BICYCLE THIEVES), SHOESHINE tells the story of two young boys who work on the streets of Rome in 1946 shining the shoes of American troops. When the boys are implicated in a petty crime, they are punished by society, resulting in tragic consequences. The Italian neorealist film was filmed on location in post-war Rome and features non-professional actors. It was inspired by the real stories of people caught up in the chaos of a world plagued by poverty and unemployment. The film received an Honorary Award at the 1948 Oscars, the first foreign film to receive an Oscar.
