A post-apocalyptic classic

Following the success of the 1979 original, this sequel raised the stakes in both scope of action and imagination. The terrain is familiar: a post-apocalyptic world where gangs fight to survive as they search for fuel and food. Gibson is appropriately rugged against the film's harsh terrain and he emerges as a kind of cowboy in the Eastwood-mould, the lonesome hero helping out a desperate community under threat from marauding barbarians. Appealing for its sheer originality, watch out for the spectacular car chase at its climax.
