Synopsis

Academy Award winner Charlize Theron (Monster) teams with Niki Caro, the award-winning screenwriter and director of Whale Rider, for this fictionalized version of the first successful legal prosecution of a sexual-harassment case in the United States.

After fleeing from her abusive husband, young mother Josey Aimes (Theron) returns home to Minnesota, where she finds work in the iron mines. Josey refuses to endure the frequent sexual innuendoes and unwelcome physical contact that her male co-workers inflict on the women. When her complaints to the mine owners fall on deaf ears, Josey seeks a legal remedy, becoming the key plaintiff in a class action lawsuit that leads to the first sexual harassment ruling in United States judicial history.

North Country is loosely based on the landmark sexual harassment lawsuit filled by Lois Jenson in 1984. Josey Aimes is a female miner who faces daily harassment and discrimination along with the other women but when she decides to stand up and take action, she finds plenty of obstacles in her fight for justice. North Country does have some great performances but these get bogged down by the nature of the film itself, which is overly long and suffers from a drawn out storyline. While the character of Josey Aimes does provoke an emotional response from the viewer, this is weakened by the fact that the message at the centre of the film is laid on so thick you end up feeling that you are being repeatedly hit round the head with it. Although watchable to pass the time, it suffers from bad pacing and loses pretty much any spark of entertainment it started off with by the end.
