more revolting than scary

1970's horror film that was inspired by a real life exorcism which took place in 1949. The Exorcist was the highest grossing film in the year it was released, and is often given the title of being the scariest film of all time. 12 year old Regan begins to develop strange symptoms and when she is sent to a priest by her mother, he suspects that she is possessed. The Exorcist may have been shocking in its heyday but it has been so overhyped that any frightening moments seem pretty tame by today's standards. That's not to say that it's not still an effective horror film, but it's more revolting than scary, and the film has been parodied so much that it's hard to take seriously. The Exorcist is not as chilling as you'd expect.
