Synopsis

A surprise hit comedy, Paul and Chris Weitz's 'American Pie' follows four high school friends Jim (Jason Biggs), Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas), Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas), and Oz (Chris Klein) through their sexually frustrated senior year. Boy-next-door Kevin hopes to finally lose his virginity to his bubbly girlfriend, Vicky (Tara Reid), while football player Oz begins an unlikely relationship with quiet chorus girl Heather (Mena Suvari). Finch struggles to maintain his cool air of witty detachment, while the neurotic Jim, most famously, has an intimate moment with apple pastry and, eventually, sexy exchange student Nadia (Shannon Elizabeth). This hysterical yet sensitive movie also features memorable characters such as the ever-wise Jessica (Natasha Lyonne), the imbecilic Stifler (Seann William Scott), the dorky Sherminator (Chris Owen), the flute-playing Michelle (Alyson Hannigan), and Jim's hilariously nerdy dad (Eugene Levy).

A good laugh, worth a watch!

I probably have a slightly rose-tinted view of this film just because of the circumstances under which I watched it. It was the start of my third year of uni, and was watching it with some mates on the same night as one of my friends was out on a first date to watch it with a first year virgin... Some of the lines like "better to do it with someone you love at high school rather than some random guy you meet at college" were just killing me as I was imagining what was going though their minds.

But quite apart from that, there's plenty of low-brow toilet humour which is just the ticket if you're watching it with some mates and some beers.

Sometimes a film can capture the spirit of the culture and speak for a generation. Sadly, and rather worryingly, American Pie did just this. This teen phenomenon follows the lives of four young men who enter a race to be the first to lose their virginity before leaving high school. These four bumbling buffoons experience the highs and lows that only teenagers can and ‘hilarious’ consequences are the result. Unsophisticated, predictable and cringe worthy – these are just a few words that can be thrown at this over-hyped monstrosity. The film doesn’t even live up to its reputation as having risqué content and ‘no holds barred’ jokes. Instead there is a barrage of immature toilet humour and constant weak innuendo. Quite how this movie has gained the following it has is somewhat extraordinary – but then teenagers are a very strange breed aren’t they?
