A rap version of 'Saturday Night Fever'

Who would want to watch 110 minutes of Eminem playing an even more annoying version of himself while over emphasising every rap cliché in the book? Well, strangely a lot of people – but god knows why. A rap version of ‘Saturday Night Fever', ‘8 Mile’ tells the story of an angry young white rapper (as you can see, Eminem really had to flex his acting muscles for this one) whose only way to express himself is through his music. This film is nothing more than a glorified ‘rap-off’ (what is that anyway?) and a chance for one of music’s biggest and over hyped show-offs to bask in his own rather pathetic genius. People might argue that rap fans will love this film but it comes across as more of an embarrassing look at the genre – one which does nothing to nullify the negative stereotypes associated with rap.

I thought this movie would be terrible, but it was actually very well done. Eminem actually displays some depth, especially in the relationships with his mom and ex-girlfriend, and I thought the film on the whole was pretty enjoyable. That and there are a bunch of 'battles' which are definitely the highlights of the film.
