A good old-fashioned Hollywood action film

    06 December 2008
A typical Ron Howard film and a typical Hollywood blockbuster, ‘Backdraft’ follows the fortunes of two fire-fighter brothers whose relationship is as volatile as fire itself. After a number of arson related murders, the siblings must work together to investigate the incidents – fighting not just the flames of fire but also their fiery rapport. One thing that must applauded in ‘Backdraft' is that the special effects are, well – special. The fire scenes are superbly well researched and executed and offer a chilling reminder of how deadly fire can be. Unfortunately, these blazing hot scenes suffer a meltdown when combined with Howard’s over-the-top and insincere storyline. Even a star-studded cast containing Donald Sutherland, Kurt Russell and Robert De Niro cannot cover up Howard’s shortcomings.
