  1. intelligent thriller

    06 December 2008
Directed by Alfonso Cuaron, Oscar-nominated Children of Men is set in a nightmarish future in which humankind is facing extinction. Disillusioned civil servant Theo is faced with the dangerous task of transporting a young pregnant woman named Kee to safety, as she carries the hope of human survival. It's certainly powerful stuff - dark and uncompromising, Children of Men paints a chilling picture of a chaotic and bleak world. It's more intelligent and original than the average mainstream film of its kind, but also manages to be highly entertaining. Well-developed characters, a nicely crafted plot, and great special effects make Children of Men a film that leaves a lasting impression on the viewer.

It's a weak and fairly dull script with a MacGuffin that simply makes no sense (i.e. what difference does it make if the woman gets to the boat?). Add in the charisma-void Clive Owen, who manages to ruin just about every film he's in, and you've got a slow moving film with characters and a cause you neither believe in nor care about. Not worth watching.
