I’m always a bit unsure of docu-dramas such as this, in particular based around ‘high school’, and fear that they are somewhat vacuous and exploitative. However, Friday Night Lights has pleasantly surprised me to say the least, and it is a must see series. The premise is based around football, but it is about so much more than that, and intelligently deals with all high school issues without demeaning on condescending the story or the viewer. Friday Night Lights involves cheating, drug abuse, love affairs, infidelity, disability, and prejudices among many more, all cerebrally dealt with. Whether or not you enjoy football, you should watch this series for the clever story interpretations and the wondrous acting.

Having read the book, this adaptation is even better. Where the book got lost at times in secondary characters, the film really stays true to the central characters on the football team and their role in the town itself. Both exciting and heartbreaking, this is one of the better American Football movies with Billy Bob on fine form. If you liked Remember the Titans, you'll definitely like this.
