Davis Gale – a man on death row, tells his story to a local reporter through a series of flashbacks and the events become less and less clear as the film progresses. Kevin Spacey gives a typically nondescript performance as Gale but this is a role that suits his rather expressionless face and is one thing that works well. As a film that has been critically slated it’s really not that bad. The problem is that there is huge confusion as to the politics of the movie. The plot also throws you this way and that before settling on a final twist. Quite frankly, it stinks of a director who is trying to make a bold political statement without researching his topic or deciding on a verdict. If this aspect had a more decisive feel then this might just be a very good watch. Sadly, ‘The Life of David Gale’ is another case of one that got away.
