Synopsis

Ex-journalist Michael Moore's blistering, satirical documentary about the closing of the General Motors plants in Flint, Michigan in the mid-1980s. This move, which eliminated 33,000 jobs and left the one-industry town destitute, was a particularly bitter tragedy, considering that Flint was the town that gave birth to General Motors during post-war boom era of the 1950s. The film revolves around Moore's dogged attempts to gain an interview with Roger Smith, the elusive and well-insulated head of GM and the man responsible for the layoffs. While tracking the eponymous Roger, Moore takes time out to record the devastation of Flint and the desperate, often unintentionally hilarious attempts of the citizens and the city fathers to deal with the catastrophe.

  1. Great film, despite some of Moore's liberties

Easily one of the funniest documentary of all time, this film takes a hard look at the common working man. So many elements in this film are excellent, and one gets to see the tough life these factory workers experience. From the intercut footage of Roger Smith's christmas goodwill speech and the workers getting evicted is one of the most surreal moments in a film full of them. While Michael Moore fiddled with the timeline egregiously, the tongue-in-cheek attitude most of the people exhibit is shocking. A movie for anyone who feels frustrated with the daily rat race.

This is actually pretty damn good - although it does highlight that Michael Moore's documentary style has not changed in two decades. Some great scenes in here, such as the juxtaposition of the Beach Boys to the dilapidated Flint - although the rabbit skinning part is not something to watch over dinner (and is completely unnecessary in the context of the film).

I also find it particularly timely based on the current mortgage crisis in the US - no doubt similar events are happening now...

I rented this after seeing Bowling for Columbine, and was not at all disappointed. Really good.
