Much more than a simple Rom-Com.

    06 December 2008
Thoroughly underrated, this is a witty and quirky film, and something many young people will empathise with. Directed and starring Ben Stiller, Winona Ryder plays Lelaina, a 20-something just out of college who creates a documentary about her jumbled and mystified friends in order to create a career in television. Stiller, a video exec, falls for her and makes her choose between him and her deadbeat boyfriend Troy. Played by Ethan Hawke, he is articulate and enchanting, and makes the audience fall in love with him. The script is sharp, which when combined with the great acting and direction create cinematic magic. It is very ‘Generation X’ in its message, and the characters are hugely likeable and quirkily brilliant. - From Troy, the lethargically challenged genius, to Sammy who is about to come out to his parents, and Vickie who keeps a record of every man she sleeps with.
