Synopsis

It is the summer of '66, and England is about to be consumed by World Cup Fever. For 12-year-old Bernie though, the biggest day of his life is looming: his Bar Mitzvah, and the day he becomes a man. However, Bernie's family is increasingly distracted by the threat of losing their business and their wayward older son, and the scale of Bernie's Bar Mitzvah diminishes daily. Worst of all the Cup Final is scheduled to take place on the same day and when England makes it through the qualifying rounds, Bernie's longed-for Bar Mitzvah looks set to be a complete disaster.

    Takes awhile to get there

This is a story about a boy’s bar mitzvah which happens to coincide with the 1966 World Cup final. This is a lovely, heart-warming film which is suitable for all ages. It has a slow start to the film which can be tedious for some people to watch but it brilliantly pulls everything together for a good, exciting finish. The dialogue is witty and fun with outstanding performances from Greg Sulkin who plays Bernie and his on screen parents of Helena Bonham Carter and Eddie Marsan. I think why this film will be loved even more it will bring back memories of 1966, the year when England won (and probably never again), the
World Cup and this film really captures the British cheers, expectations and excitement during that year. To blend that in with Bernie’s bar mitzvah was done very well. The attention to detail is just amazing and you can tell that the production had done their research.
