Will entertain the kids but no 'Mary Poppins'

After recently losing his wife, the excessively British Colin Firth is left alone with 7 mischievous children. Just when Firth's morbid character is on the brink, a mysterious and magical Nanny arrives from thin air and suddenly their lives are very, very different. There is enough mystique and light-hearted humour throughout the film to entertain children but no single feature that really stands out. The performance of the two lead roles (Colin Firth and Emma Thompson) is average at best and director Kirk Jones throws together a mish-mash of colours that confuse rather than dazzle. One huge problem that stops the film from being a success is that it just isn’t ‘Mary Poppins’. For such a similar themed movie that has so much to compare to this really is a big, fat Achilles heel. All together now - ’A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down…….’
