Like most conversions from page to big screen, the film doesn’t really compare to the Dr. Seuss source but ‘The Grinch’ is still a whole lot of fun. Jim Carrey dons the green make-up for the second time in his career (remember ‘The Mask’?) as he plays the role of the cynical and spiteful Grinch like only he can. This movie would not be nearly as funny without him – it takes a wacky and committed actor to pull off this part and Carrey passes with flying colours. The supporting role of young Taylor Momsen adds an element of charm while the set and costumes provide a wonderful sense of magical fantasy. Sadly, although this movie is still great fun for children and adults alike, ‘The Grinch’ has far too much to live up to. The book and cartoon remain the most wholesome portrayals of this delightful story but this film is still an enjoyable experience and offers a valuable lesson to all.
