Synopsis

Wes Craven (The People Under the Stairs, Shocker) directs this terrifying story of one man's nightmarish journey into the eerie and deadly world of voodoo.

A Harvard anthropologist (Bill Pullman) is sent to Haiti to retrieve a strange powder that is said to have the power to bring human beings back from the dead. In his quest to find the miracle drug, the cynical scientist enters the rarely seen netherworld of walking zombies, blood rites and ancient curses.

Based on the true life experiences of Wade Davis and filmed on location in Haiti, it's a frightening excursion into black magic and the supernatural.

Entertaining Horror

This is an entertaining horror movie from Wes Craven. Starring Bill Pullman, the plot involves an anthropologist traveling to Haiti after hearing rumours about a drug used by black magic practitioners to turn people into zombies. For the diehard horror buffs, they might find the plot journey slow but I certainly think it is worth it. The acting is not outstanding but it is solid throughout, giving the audience just enough to actually care about them without going into too much character depth. This is one of Bill Pullman’s better roles which makes up for his later bad, dull, cringe worthy performance as the US President in Independence Day. The movie goes into a lot of detail about voodoo practices which is really the highlight of the film. It also has its scare moments, especially when Pullman’s character gets dragged underneath the earth which is my personal highlight of the film.
