Synopsis

Boris Karloff's legendary performance has become a landmark in the annals of screen history. As the mummy, Im-Ho-Tep, he is accidentally revived after 3,700 years by a team of British archaeologists. It is revealed in a flashback that he was a high priest, embalmed alive for trying to revive the vestal virgin whom he loved, after she had been sacrificed. Alive again, he sets out to find his lost love.
Today, over 50 years after The Mummy was first released, this brooding dream-like film remains a masterpiece not only of the genre, but for all time.

'It comes to life!' Indeed the mummy certainly does thanks to the mistake of a young archaeologist. After ten years, the mummy attempts to reunite himself with his long-dead princess who has been reincarnated as the beautiful Helen Grosvenor, but his plan cannot be achieved without resistance. The Mummy relies more on a chilling atmosphere and eerie mood rather than all-out shocks, with the actual monster using curses instead of more gory tactics. However, this makes for a more creepy film, with subtle but effective frights. Karloff's performance of the ancient Egyptian Imhotep is intense and understated, and succeeds in leaving a lasting impact on the viewer, and the film itself is made very enjoyable by sheer suspense. The Mummy shows that horror doesn't have to be in your face to be entertaining.
