Out Of Africa

Great cinematography but a flawed execution

Based on a true tale, this film details the memoirs of a Danish Baroness who moves with her husband to Africa to set up a coffee plantation. This film really is a mishmash of successes and failures. The cultural references are of huge interest from a historical point of view and are presented fairly well. Combined with some truly breathtaking footage of Africa and this movie has a solid base to work from. Unfortunately ‘Out of Africa’ doesn’t take advantage of this. Whether it is inept writing, sub-standard acting or the decent but inappropriate score, the film fails to be the absorbing and moving experience that it tries to be. Amidst Meryl Streep’s admirable attempt at a Danish accent Redford simply refuses to make any such effort and his American tone gives the movie a rather uneven feel – an atmosphere that is sadly evident throughout.
