Synopsis

In director Robert Altman's (1925 - 2006) final masterpiece, A Prairie Home Companion tells the tale of a much loved US radio show still surviving in the age of television. Garrison Keillor joins forces with an all star cast in this tale of the last ever live recording of one of America's broadcasting institutions.

The show's broadcasters, WLT, have been bought out by a Texan conglomerate who decide to axe the show and it's cast. Garrison Keiller as hangdog MC leads the veteran performers including Yolanda and Rhonda - The Johnson sisters (Meryl Streep and lily Tomlin) and Dusty and Lefty, The Old Trail Hands (Woddy Harrelson and John C. Reilly), as they make their final performance and reminisce of times gone by.

With wonderful supporting performances from Lindsey Lohan, Kevin Kline and Tommy Lee Jones, A Prairie Home Companion is an effortlessly charming and endearing film from one of Hollywood's greatest directing talents.

Laugh and cry

This movie was a wonderful reminder to me of a great style of show, one that is rapidly fading. A Prairie Home Companion celebrates all the small town shows in the little theaters that are so capable of making you laugh along with them. You get to know and care for the characters in a way that isn't possible for most movies. It felt like I was right there in that theater watching a live show, not a movie. Everyone knows a man like GK, the perfect MC, with his slow speaking style, many stories, and a tendency to wander. You can sympathize with the stage director as she works to get everyone out on time. The joking cowboys, with a gift for song. The ladies with their gift of music that reminds you of when you were young and things were simple. That one great moment of stage fright, when it is you up there for the first time. From beginning to end.
