The Hunt for Red October

Despite one or two flaws, the Hunt for the Red October is a gripping and satisfying film. Sean Connery is good as Captain Marko Ramius although his believability as a Russian is dodgy as a midnight takeaway because his rich Scottish accent is still present through his Russian. Tim Curry struggles also with the accent as the ship’s doctor, Dr. Petrov and the only person that does it well it Sam Neil. Despite the dodgy accents, this is a very well made film with director John McTiernan excelling as he manages an all-star cast. This film could have been boring with all the technical information and dialogue branded about but McTiernan manages to keep the pace moving without letting the audience get confused. This is one of the first times you will see the character of Jack Ryan, played by Alec Baldwin and he does a good job but I personally prefer Harrison Ford’s incarnation.
