Jim Henson was an American puppeteer and filmmaker best known for creating The Muppets. Having worked for years as an entertainer with a small gang of puppets, in 1969 Henson was asked to work on what become Sesame Street creating characters such as Big Bird, Bert, Ernie and the Cookie Monster. Following this, he was able to create The Muppet Show, a variety program which aimed to entertain an audience of all ages. Henson died, tragically at the age of 53.
