Following his first lead role in 1999's October Sky, he starred in the indie cult hit Donnie Darko (2001) alongside his older sister, actress Maggie Gyllenhaal. He earned an Academy Award Nomination for his role as Jack Twist in Brokeback Mountain (2005). Other notable films include Jarhead (2005), Zodiac (2007), Love & Other Drugs (2010), Source Code (2011) and End of Watch (2012).
