Petersen is known for his body of film work, which includes Outbreak, In the Line of Fire, Air Force One, The Perfect Storm, Troy and the 2006 film, Poseidon. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director for the 1981 World War II submarine warfare film Das Boot.
