He was born in Murwillumbah, New South Wales, Australia, and educated at Marist College Kogarah.He taught in Mendooran, New South Wales, but moved to Sydney in the 1960s. Hargreaves was mainly a film actor, but perhaps is best remembered by Australian audiences as the title role in the TV drama Young Ramsay in the 1970's. He was the only actor to receive the Byron Kennedy Award, a prestigious film award (in 1994). He died of AIDS in 1996.
