She has had lead roles in TBS's The Bill Engvall Show and in the independent films The Burning Plain and Winter's Bone, for which she received critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. In 2012, she achieved international recognition starring as the heroine Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games and critical acclaim for her role as a recovering sex addict in Silver Linings Playbook.
