Overview

Synopsis:

Art imitates life in this smart comedy starring Saturday Night Live alums Tina Fey, Tracy Morgan, and frequent host Alec Baldwin. In addition to writing and executive producing 30 Rock, Fey plays Liz Lemon, the head writer on a variety series called 'The Girlie Show'. But the new Vice President of East Coast Television, Jack Donaghy (Baldwin), decides to shake up the show, adding eccentric actor Tracy Jordan (Morgan) to the cast and changing the name. A critical hit, 30 Rock garnered a Golden Globe win for Fey in its first series for its brand of comedy that ably straddles intelligence and silliness. This sitcom also features Jane Krakowski ( Ally McBeal), Scott Adsit (Kicking and Screaming), and Judah Friedlander. But with such a deep bench of talent, the show's secret weapon is Kenneth, played by Jack McBrayer (Arrested Development), whose naivete is a hilarious contrast to the rest of the characters. This release features the first series in its entirety.

Not bad, but a little over-rated.

Just purchased and watched series 1. It's watch-able and mildly amusing at best. The "clever" humour is really rather obvious and actually didn't appeal to my sense of humour.

When I watched all those award shows and Alec Baldwin kept on winning best comedy performance, I kept wondering to myself why. Not that he is a bad actor but the fact he wins them all. To ease my curiosity, I took the plunge and decided to watch this show. The verdict – OMG hilarious! I’ve never laughed so hard at a comedy show since Friends (pre-season 5). It’s sharp, witty and deserves all the awards it gets. It’s definitely one of the best shows on TV right now.

Mr Baldwin...I’m sorry I ever doubted you.

It's the smartest comedy to come out of the US since Seinfeld - really.

    Both funny AND clever

The show that’s already won countless Golden Globes, 30 Rock is a really sharp satire on the inner workings of US network television. The title refers to the location of NBC headquarters in New York, at 30 Rockafella Centre, and it’s rare to see a corporation such as NBC lampooning itself as it exposes some of the absurdities of corporate culture.

Based on her experience on Saturday Night Live (also by NBC), Tina Fey plays Liz Lemon, head writer of the Tracey Morgan show. She’s surrounded by her team of nerdy writers and plagued by an egotistical, eccentric star played by Tracey Jordan. Jordan plays a once-successful movie star of Big Momma-style movies but is now confined to life on a late night ‘skit’ show.

Alec Baldwin has won three Golden Globes for his role as NBC executive Jack Donaghy. It was inspired casting – Baldwin was a handsome lead actor in high profile movies but never showed a flair for comedy on the big screen. Here he gives what is perhaps a perfect comic performance. Tough and ruthless, every line is delivered with a conspiratorial hushed gravitas that makes almost anything funny.

Tina Fey is a clear argument against the tired cliché that women can’t be funny. Her Liz Lemon character switches (un)gracefully from confidence to humiliation and like all the best characters she’s refreshingly unafraid to look stupid for the sake of a laugh.

At times genuinely surprising and very silly, 30 Rock brings together a cast of disparate comic characters, and with its satirical focus it’s really worth all those awards.
